IUCN Vulnerable, the remaining three-quarters live in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Others persist in numerous pockets of declining size in northern Morocco and Algeria.
Calling this species an ape is misleading, for though it lacks a tail, as do apes it is in fact a macaque belonging to the old world monkeys.
