Abandoned Boat on shore - Dungeness, Kent

DAD-1927
Abandoned Boat on shore - Dungeness, Kent.
The beach at Dungeness looks like a dumping ground, but geologists are fascinated by the action of tides and wind on this extreme corner of Kent.
Fishermen are here because the sea near the shingle beach is exceptionally deep - approx. 35 fathoms. It is an amazing place with abandoned trawlers and discarded
fishing paraphernalia. September.

Skunkbush Sumac - a woody plant that flourish in the dune field

TD-1859
Skunkbush Sumac - a woody plant that flourish in the dune field.
White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, USA.
Rhus trilobata
As the dunes move on, the Sumac's roots allow the plant to hold on to the sand soil needed to keep it alive and at the same height as when the dune was present. The glistening dunes of White Sands in the Tularosa Basin are not sand, but fine gypsum, deposited on an ancient seabed 250 million years ago. Gypsum, a form of calcium sulfate, is water soluble and washes away. But geological forces here created a basin with no outlet.
