Bungle Bungle rock formations - Purnululu National Park.
southern part of the Kimberley region in the far northeast of Western Australia.
These sandstone and conglomerate beehive-like towers were formed through water erosion 350 million years ago. The have unique black and orange bands. The orange colour is iron and manganese staining on what is actually a whitish rock and the black bands are an algal growth on rocks that are more permeable. The dampness allows algae to grow. Access is by 4WD only. Commonly known as the Bungle Bungles area it is officially known as Purnululu National Park.
