MASTIC - Chios, Greece
Pistacia lentiscus var chia
Greece
A transparent resin, known as mastic, is obtained from the tree. This is collected by bleeding the bark. When chewed, the resin becomes white and opaque.
Mastic resin is a spice. Its used in liquors and drinks, chewing gum pastiles, baked goods, cosmetics such as toothpaste and lotions for the hair and skin as well as perfumes. It is also used in preparation of Turkish Delight. The best quality mastic grows in the Greek island of Chios, where it is also known by the name "Chios Tears". People in the Mediterranean also use it as a medicine for gastrointestinal ailments. The Mastichohoria (mastic-producing villages) are located in the southern part of Chios.
