Tawny Frogmouths - pair at their nest in a Jarrah Tree in south-western Australia.
Mt Barker, Western Australia. Spring 1957.
Podargus strigoides
This pair nested on exactly the same site in successive years, 1957 and 1958. The nest was about 10m above ground level. Frogmouths are nocturnal and feed mainly on the ground, scooping up invertebrates, or the occcasional mouse or lizard, with their wide, shallow beak. They appear to be mated for life, and are very habitual, often roosting in the same spot for many years. The standing bird has a band on its left leg. Also known as Tawny-shouldered Frogmouth.
